GEORGIA ON MY MIND

While Bush is not to blame for Putin's actions regarding Georgia, he is to blame for how few our options are at this point by getting embroiled in Iraq. Without that mess going on we might have been able to send in the 82nd Airborne and a few wings of F-15's and dared Putin to continue invading.

Oh don't be an idiot. We could have a military ten times bigger than we do now and we never would have sent a single soldier to take on the Russians.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE, BABY!

"name one – just one – government enterprise that was ever run so efficiently that it could compete with market driven companies"

The military (take a look at Rennaisance European history for a fun look at private military units). Intelligence gathering (eg: the Pinkertons). Fire companies. Also currency production and management. That is with 2 minutes thought. I'm sure I could find more.

But I do agree that taking over refineries would not be a good idea.

I see your point but private fire companies used to be the norm in the country and still dot the landscape. They may not be any better but I'll be they're cheaper.

As for currency production, no one has ever tried privatizing it so I guess we'll never know. Remember, the challenge was a public entity DOING AS GOOD OR BETTER than a priviate one.

AREN'T THERE ANY GROWN UPS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY?

The problem with what Bush said is that it is basically wrong. There is a great quote from Moshe Dayan - who knew the Middle East and was no liberal:

"If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies. "

MY TOP TEN FAVORITE DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS OF ALL TIME

Funny thing about #7 (The Gamma Ray Burst) but they just found a star ~ 8,000 light years away that may go GRB on us at any time and might be pointing straight at us.

CITIZEN SCIENTIST RE-IGNITES GLOBAL WARMING SKEPTICISM

Rick, your comparison to the Big Bang theory may be more apt than you want it to be. As cosmology developed in a science, most cosmologists assumed the universe to be eternal. They had no real evidence for that - they were simply operating on the principle that there should be no privileged frame of reference. As evidence began to accumulate (Olber's paradox, recession of the galaxies, etc) keeping that story going required more and more desperate measures such as Fred Hoyle's theory that expansion was caused by new matter being spontaneously created somehow. One of the predictions made by the Big Bang theory was that of cosmic microwave background radiation. That radiation was discovered in the 1960's and the last opposition to the Big Bang theory (well almost all of it) was dropped. Climatology has likewise grown from assumptions based on little evidence (we are not capable of changing the atmosphere on a global scale) to theories based on mounting evidence (we are capable of causing such changes).
And you need to drop the volcano statement if you ever want to have any credibility. According to the USGS Pinatubo put 237 million metric tons of CO2 into the air. Volcanos worldwide (barring major eruption) put out ~ 60 million tons each year. The US alone put out 5 *billion* metric tons each year. I dunno who lied to you on that one but you might not want to use them as a source any more.

BLOOMBERG BOLTS GOP - PREPARES FOR VANITY PRESIDENTIAL RUN

I agree that:
1) He is a better Mayor than Rudy was.
2) He has little shot at winning as an indep.
3) If he did somehow win he'd have a really tough time handling Congress. And that is the real shame because in my opinion both of the parties need to be gutted and that's not going to happen unless there are some other viable parties.
